Helmantel Meets Huisman – Henk Helmantel
18 December 2024 /

‘I never met Jopie. Strange, really. But of course I meet him in his work’, said Helmantel. This exhibition was a meeting between the two artists: not literally, but closely, side by side across time and space.
Both deeply rooted in the north of the country, they each find their own style within realism. In their still lifes they choose simple objects: a bird's nest, a child's shoe or a pewter jug, often worn and marked by time.
Henk Helmantel (Westeremden, 1945) selected more than forty still lifes and church interiors, including ‘Chinese skirt on a Spanish table’. In a film and audio tour he spoke about his own and Jopie's paintings.
