Permanent exhibition: Jopie Huisman

Painter, storyteller, rag-and-bone man. Jopie Huisman is all of these things. Through his art and his stories, he takes you on a journey. To swaying reeds along the water’s edge. To Sjoerd’s sad eyes. To worn-out shoes, a discarded rag doll and a pair of old underpants. ‘What’s on display here in the museum is like a little love story,’ he says.

Jopie doesn’t paint people, but their rags. ‘I paint the old and the broken, because I see how wonderfully beautiful these things are.’ Feel Jopie’s emotion and love for things that have been cast aside at the Jopie Huisman Museum.

Audio tour
The exhibition starts with an introductory film and is structured around the themes of nature, compassion and sustainability. During the audio tour you can hear Jopie speaking about his finest drawings and paintings. It’s a very personal and intimate experience.

Cathedral
‘The cathedral dedicated to my art’ – that is how Jopie Huisman referred to ‘his’ museum. After the refurbishment in 2022 the principles of the original open and symmetrical architecture were restored
